San Antonio Landmarks
Historic Exceptional Landmarks are those considered most unique in terms of
historic, cultural, archaeological significance. Demolition would mean an
irreplaceable loss to the quality and character of the city. Some examples
include the Alamo and Municipal Auditorium. Historic Significant Landmarks are
those considered to be important and their demolition would mean a serious loss
to the character of the city. Some examples include the Irish Flats houses
neighborhood near Ave. E. There are currently over 1300 designated landmarks in
the city.
Landmark designation does not affect the use of a property. Land use is
regulated by Zoning. Designation does, however, affect the aesthetics of any
exterior changes made to landmarks or properties within local historic
districts.
